Fearless. Surreal. Notorious. Trippy. Sincere. Confident. Inspiring. Totally unique in his ability to charm, confound and let you in on the joke all simultaneously, Chris Elliott has routinely helped to set the template for the post-post-modern alternative comedy landscape. It’s been almost thirty years since this four-time Emmy winner/veteran laugh wrangler burst onto the broadcast landscape, first melding exquisitely strange sketch concepts with equally outré characterizations during his stint on Letterman, continuing on to his über-beloved Get A Life, the spectacularly novel star vehicle Cabin Boy, SNL, show-stealing appearances on How I Met Your Mother, and up through today’s Adult Swim hit Eagleheart. Having taken over the mantle from the late Andy Kaufman as the King of Comedy Experiments, Elliott is American humor’s pre-eminent smasher of the fourth wall — and remains one of Cinefamily’s most favorite shaker-uppers of what he himself calls “the stodgy middle-of-the-road clam chowder called ‘network television.’” It is a seriously great honor to have Chris appear in person at our house, for a primetime hangout sesh.
